Grant's Birthday

It came quick and was over in the blink of an eye. I remember just this time last year we were ring shopping and we went to that AMAZING sufjan stevens show in SLC. It's REALLY been a year? crazy!

This year I gave Grant a mini set of designer chairs. I thought I would surprise him by fulfilling our 5 year plan a little early by getting an eames lounge chair. It's not the real thing, but I think it works.

from michigan to savannnah and back

This week was spent traveling from Michigan to North Carolina to Savannah, and it was a blast. Grant and I went down to the High Point furniture market in High Point, NC and then down to Savannah to visit Ellen and Daniel. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

This is a little taste of beautiful savannah architecture. Everything in the town is very historical. I've never been anywhere that compares to how classic and dream like this town is. I fell in love with it the moment I saw all of the beautiful buildings/houses.

This is the store front of The Paris Market, a cute shop in downtown Savannah, with a similar appeal to Anthropologie, but has much more to explore. Ellen's boss, Paula, owns the shop, and I had such a fun time exploring inside.

This is a picture at the SCAD museum opening. Grant is looking at some SWEET 3-d wall paper.

This is what I ate at zunziz in savannah. It's a blend of Swiss, Italian South African and Dutch food, and is a hip place to eat in town with a cook who is always saying "shit yeah"

So I thought I might do a little updating of my life since It is needed. Grant and I are in Beautiful Michigan right now where the leafs are the brightest oranges and reds. It truly is beautiful here and his parents live on a lake so there is nothing to complain about.

We've been doing a lot of fun things but my favorite so far has been Grand Rapids. for a great city guide visit design sponge. While in Grand rapids we visited the Electric Cheetah restaurant where they have an eclectic mix of vegetarian meals and carnivore dishes. Then we found the Meyer May house by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was easy to pick out among all the houses in the area and wasn't that far from the restaurant. Then we moved on to Art Prize. It goes from sept 21- oct 9 and the city is filled with art. We also stopped by the Alexander Calder sculpture while we were in the city, and while we were there we found ourselves in the middle of a flash mob.

One other fun event was our trip to Detroit to see the film Urbanized by Gary Hustwit. Its a great documentary about urban planning. It even features detroit. Gary has also created the films Helvetica & Objectified, and was even at the screening. The Q&A after the film got a little bit interesting with passionate detroitians voicing their views about the current problems with the empty buildings in the city, but it was overall a great film.

*we bought this poster. :) i can't wait to get the other ones and hang it up somewhere on ... a wall where ever we move.

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

Today was one of the craziest days ever, and it started at 3am. But it all came together and my sister arrived in salt lake at 10:30, took pictures of Grant and I, and left at 3. Plus it was snowing outside. Poor planning, but I think we got some great shots.

So my sister took these pictures of Grant and I for fun one night while we were home in Reno. I got an idea to take pictures in feathers so we went out and bought 5 feather pillows at target. But..... we only needed one.

in an attempt to find new years resolutions I decided that I would do a picture a day. And I did... until just a couple of days ago when I decided I didn't want to do that anymore. So my goals do not reside on the internet. They are focused on my personal life and include:

_pushing myself spiritually
_focusing on my future life with my fiance Grant Rogers
_putting it ALL into school no more half-assed projects

It's already been a week since I was sleeping in the very bed that I slept in while I was still living with my parents. I was also eating out of the same kitchen and tromping the reno strip with my first best friend kt.

and this is the mark twain type museum in virginia city. My dad's interest in my interests has exponentially grown since he loves letterpress. well at least the machines. He's always fascinated with the way things work.

I love my family. I don't necessarily love reno but I love going home once in awhile.

So i'm teaching my calligraphy class again in the fall and this time I'm going to be more prepared. I have already planned my lessons, i'm just that on top of it. In the midst of that I've also been checking up on my favorite blogs for amazing ideas and inspiration.

She is Amazing. Go check out this article about her on the AIGA site. Her work primarily uses pen and ink calligraphy ornaments to create beautiful illustrations. I've been working on trying to create something similar, but I might just have to leave it to her

I ran across this today when i was looking for actionscript help for making a slideshow with buttons. (i've forgotten how to do it and if anyone could help me PLEASE HELP) but besides the point I ran across this smart little article in smashing magazine about brand books and why they are important.

It's always nice to see what other people are doing but its even better when you find something pretty clever. Here is an article in which Christopher Doyl did a brand guide on himself. I'm tempted to make my own. I have some pretty good ideas about what I might do.

This summer my world has been turned upside down and happiness has become much less of a monetary expense. I feel a little ashamed that it took me this long to have a summer like this in pure bliss. While living in Michigan I've been in a tiny town. It's what my dad calls a duck and plum town because you... duck and plum miss it. But it's been really nice. I've never lived in a place where things didn't matter. There is no racing towards the red lipstick in the morning and life is simple. In fact its been very refreshing for me. I've been able to focus on what really matters. Family, spending time with people, having a good laugh and watching the sunset.

And I've done all of that plus more. Watching this video this morning not only really made we want to go to paris but it made me remember what its like to be a little girl and skip around in dresses. WATCH IT, i'm sure it will make you reminisce. or at least want to be little again

While I've Been here in Sanford I've come to realize I am not near a gym (well at least a Gold one). I'm near an amazing yoga studio, but a super expensive one. So what is a girl to do? become fat lazy and a cow? I THINK NOT!

So I've Decided to Become a runner!

But only with some great running tips from Thomas. So here goes it:

1. Don't Kick your heels against or even close to your butt

2. make sure to relax your shoulders-- they'll get really tight really quickly unless you allow them to drop (don't tense up!)

3. Practice running on your toes as much as possible. be careful about toe running too much too quickly though, it can mess you up

He also suggested to go to a track and "sprint" straights and jog curves for 2 miles, building up from a 60% of your max sprint pace.

This all sounds kinda text book to me though.... i think he might have copy and pasted it into gchat to make me feel better. Anyways, I hope it works

This is the coolest thing. It's a typography workbook. Because us designers are ADD to the extreme and need something else to focus on after a long while.

I'm extremely disappointed that they are sold out, but Some day I will have one!

freezer jamming

Strawberry freezer jam:

ingredients

3 cups crushed fresh strawberries
3 cups sugar
1 (1.75 oz) package dry pectin
3/4 cup water
1-2 packages strawberry jello gelatin

directions

1. mix crushed strawberries with sugar, and let stand for 10 minutes. meanwhile, stir the pectin into the water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, and boil for 1 minute. Add desired amount of gelatin. Its supposed to sweeten up the jam a little bit and add texture so add desired amount depending on how thing and sweet you want the jam to be. Stir the boiling water into the strawberries. Allow to stand for 3 minutes before pouring into jars or other storage containers.

2. Place tops on the containers, and leave for 24 hours. Place into freezer, and store frozen untl ready to use.

3 yarn_ from the farmers market in union sq. There was tons of it. I don't know where they keep the sheep but is was fresh yarn.

5 Kusmi tea_ bought at Dean and Delucca in Soho. I love this tea. I fell in love with it while I was in Paris. My favorite part is the packaging.

6. chocolate_ made in brooklyn bought in brooklyn. I was off on my own and stumbled upon a little local grocery store. so i picked up some local chocolate.

7. a business card_ what a great idea!

8. A set of bird stamps_ bought at the Whitney museum. I'm starting to fall in love with stamps. and i already love birds so it was a great find.

9. rosebud salve_ anthropologie union sq. YES they are finally making it in tubes!

10. keels simple diary_ the taschen store in soho. Love this journal. It's great very simple. All you have to do for each day is rate it on a scale of 1-10 and write a short description. Also asks some quirky things about each day. Really fun

11. tibetan singing bowl_ ABC carpet. THIS IS MY FAVORITE PURCHASE. I've always wanted one of these. Its for relaxation and is used during yoga meditation. It really helps for zoning out all other thoughts.

I'm so excited because this packaging project has inspired me to buckle down to my roots and actually do some gardening... (as opposed to Gardnering) So right now I'm growing trees and spiramint! exciting we'll see how it works. I was spending time on blogs and came across this really cool website where you could put together outfits. I'm sure i'm just completely behind on whats hip and cool in websites... this has probably been around forever... but it definitly beats doing my homework.

In my attempts to stay off facebook, i've been trying to be more productive. Therefore, I've turned to shopping... EEK what a bad habit. I've also been trying to use my blog more. And that's a good thing right? Documenting my life on the internet.... such a great way to fill in the gaps of wasted facebook time.

Anyways, if you didn't know already, I LOVE BOOTS... so much!!!!! i just really like shoes. Maybe someday I'll design some... who knows... but wouldn't that be so cool!
These are a pair of boots that I got yesterday and I believe them to be the most outragiously amazing boots that i've ever owned.
